They Began as College Sweethearts...

Prince William & Kate Middleton

They began as college sweethearts, but today Kate & William start their new lives together as husband and wife. This real life fairytale is providing American's with a taste of royalty. This story is one of romance and fantasy and love. The future King & Queen of England, however, took almost ten years to make it to the alter. This beautiful love story just offers us warm and fuzzies and so much false hope! It sends the message that if you just wait.... and wait like Kate you too can marry the man of your dreams. But it doesn't really happen that way.

The couple met in college and dated off and on for almost ten years. He said to her in 2007, be patient and I will make you my wife eventually and she was, and he did. But is this romantic story the exception or the rule?

Should you wait on the one you love or move on with your life???

I think about this question almost every day. You always here from older adults about "the one that got away" and it kind of makes you wonder. How do you know when the one is "The One" or the one to let go. Sometimes you need to move on and sometimes you need to go back! But how do you know the difference between the two?

William fell in love with Kate at the age of 19, but he wasn't quite ready to committ early on in their relationship. As a young soldier, he worked hard and played hard too! He lived it up and partied a bit before getting down on one knee. But, I am not attempting to bash William, because I love Prince William! So let me just say that I am not teamKate or teamWilliam, but I am teamWillandKate.

Anywho, Will & Kate eventually got married (today) after a long courtship. But I sympathize for both individuals in this situation. As a woman, I feel for Kate waiting and waiting on the ring. It is very difficult to give someone your heart and know that you want to marry them, but end up waiting and waiting for years. On the other hand, I understand why Will (or any man) would want to be a bit more cautious in matters of the heart. Especially when you think about the fact that William suffered through his parents' traumatic divorce, it makes sense for him to be more careful.

Marriage is supposed to be forever so if you really do have forever, does it really matter when forever starts? We all want to find that one special someone that we're supposed to spend forever with, but you really just never know how the fairytale will unfold.

Celebreality

Kim Kardashian is the #1 fantasy of men across the country and perhaps even the world. And she's also a fantasy for many women. Men fantasize about being with her while women fantasize about being her.

Love her or hate her you cannot hate on her body. She's in shape, but still has the curves. She has fortune and fame and it seems like she couldn't want for more. I was watching the Kourtney & Khloe show today and I just realized that celebrities have so many insecurities and face some of the same issues that we do. It was a really crazy moment because we go to the gym (or do the Kim Kardashian workout DVDs) and spend hours on end trying to get the bodies in the magazines, but the very people who have those bodies (some with the help of airbrushing) still don't have it all!

Kim confided (on national tv) in a friend that she didn't feel like she would meet anyone after Reggie (Bush). And I thought Wow if Kim Kardashian doesn't think she can find anyone than there must be no hope for the rest of us! But clearly she's a person. A human being. Not the mega superstar who poses for all of the magazines. She is a real person who faces the same issues we all do - finding someone to settle down with and live happily ever after with (just like in the fairytales). On the show she spoke about how she had hoped to be married, have one kid and another on the way by the time she was 30. Kim, who will turn 30 in October, is nowhere near the soccer mom track, but who knows what the future holds. For her, or for those of us who envy her.

Celebrity Soccer Mom's who (seem to) have it all:
1. Jennifer Garner
2. Reese Witherspoon
3. Kendra Wilkinson
4. Kimora Lee Simmons
5. Jada Pinkett-Smith
6. Christina Aguilera
7. Nicole Ritchie
8. Jessica Alba
9. Jennifer Lopez
10. Katie Holmes

Career Crossroads

Flight Attendant, Lawyer, Photographer, Journalist. Though I've had several dreams and aspirations of what to be when I "grow up", I pretty much had it settled that I would become a reporter by eighth grade. Most men, however, are still figuring it out... Why?!

Why is it that men always seem to be wandering through life aimlessly or chasing some pipe dream? Meanwhile, women are so focused on chasing their careers that they have absolutely no time to chase (or be chased by) a man.

I'm not sure if it began with Rosie the Riveter or if it started when mass amounts of women went to work in the 80s, but somewhere along the way women took over the corporate world. It seems to me that women are just much more focused on their careers than men, starting as early as high school. Women are more focused and concerned about applying to colleges, taking all the AP classes, and getting a high GPA to get into the best schools possible. Men wait until the last possible minute to apply to colleges, are less likely to take AP or Dual Enrollment courses, and tend not to put forth the extra effort in class and just do enough to get by.

Then once we get to college, the proof is in the pudding. The proportion of men to women at universities and colleges today is unbelievable. "There are more men than women ages 18-24 in the USA — 15 million vs. 14.2 million, according to a Census Bureau estimate last year. But nationally, the male/female ratio on campus today is 43/57, a reversal from the late 1960s and well beyond the nearly even splits of the mid-1970s." (USA Today) At my school the statistics are worse than the national average, at only 31% male.

This recent trend presents us with several problems in our love lives. For starters, if men are flaky and women are focused in their career worlds than they will be the same way in their relationships. Men will treat the relationship as something casual and less concrete until they have narrowed in on a career path. They cannot fully commit to you until they no what their purpose in life is and how they can adequately provide for you. It's in their nature. We are not historically, the head of the household, so we tend to be less concerned with the weight that comes with trying to provide for a family.

Another issue with this is the fact that it forces women to choose between their romance and their careers. It's difficult for women to find love when they are surrounded by men who are going nowhere fast. We need partners who will uplift us, encourage us, inspire us. But instead we end up motivating them into a career. Eventually either he leaves because he feels inferior or she leaves in search of someone on her level. It's a lose-lose situation either way.

This is a never-ending issue that we all face at one point or another, but all we can do is be patient. Keep chasing your dream and your dream guy will appear at the right time. But whatever you do, never settle for less than your best.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder...?

So... I am going to put a link to a video on here and I want you to watch it, but I also want you to come back as soon as you finish.:)

This is a video clip from the animated verision of Robin Hood about the love he had for the Maid Marian and how their love stood the test of time. Click here to watch.

So my question is: Does absence make the heart grow fonder or give room to wander???

Most of my friends are in long distance relationships and I must admit I have a bit of experience with it as well. But I also have dated and have friends who have dated in close proximity and I often wonder which is better. And I know those of you who are in long distance relationships are saying, C'mon it sucks and you know it! And yes, it does suck, and yes, I do know it. But with the same token it does have its perks. For instance, in a long distance relationship the time you do spend together is so precious and so much fun because you both know how rare it is. The distance also allows you a bit of freedom - time to develop a personality, friends, and hobbies of your own. Whereas, some relationships can become too clingy when people live close to each other and women tend to take on the likes and dislikes of the person they're with.

But after all of those good things fade from your memory and you realize that you are in a relationship, but you're still alone... well it sucks.

So like I was saying earlier, and to answer the question, yes absence does make the heart grow fonder. It keeps things fresh and allows for the romance to stay more like courting. When you are dating from a distance, you actually go on dates as oppossed to just hanging out all the time. It gives you something beautiful to look forward to as the days pass while you are apart.

But don't make it too long! You should schedule regular visits and stick to them. Find your limit, the absolute most amount of time you can be apart without going crazy! For instance, if you know you need to see him or her every two weeks then plan trips every other week and alternate who visits who. Which brings me to another point, if at all possible the travels should be equal and balanced. Noone should be putting forth more effort than the other to make this thing work.

And lastly, you have to close the gap eventually. You can't have a permanent long distance relationship. The distance should only be temporal or else the couple may begin to tire of the added stress. If you are serious about the person you are with then you should probably make long term plans to be in the same city. I do, however, know a married couple who has a long distance marriage and it seems to work for them. But that is a specific circumstance and I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for most.

Here's what you said on Twitter!
Rcollier029 @sexintheville "I think it depends on the person and the circumstances. I think, small absence makes you grow fonder but long absence wander."

wrecklessmania @sexintheville "if done right fonder but it can quickly wander."

MsCrimson_S_nce @sexintheville "I think if the person is truly committed 2 the other and 2 the relationship the heart will grow fonder, otherwise it will wander."

Kissing Frogs

In light of the new Disney release, The Princess and The Frog, I have become very observant of women and men and the concept of waiting for Prince Charming. Watching the movie, I was very proud of Princess Tiana for standing firm in her independence, but at the same time I couldn't help but wonder how many of us out there are still waiting for our Prince.

The whole boy-meets-girl concept of falling in love and everything working out instantaneously is a manufactured concept that was created by Disney, Hallmark, and Zales. We all want that.

This is most definitely the age of the Independent Woman, but somehow we all still manage to 'kiss frogs' with hopes of finding that one frog that will magically turn into a Prince. Even though we're all far too old for fairy tales, we still long for the magic, hope for the dreamy happily ever after ending that seemed to work for Snow White, Cinderella, and now even Tiana.

Is there a Prince? Is there a Princess? Is there even a happy ending? Someone told me today, that there was no such thing as 'Mr. Right' unless he was mute!

Maybe she's right. Maybe there is not perfect one for you. Maybe life is more complex than a Disney movie. Maybe you just have to find someone you like and make it work. Maybe. But in the mean time... Pucker Up!
